about

CHANNEL is the first open-release solo album by veteren Melbourne-based artist/producer Robin Waters.

Made over a period of 7 years, it is about things that aren’t real and how they effect the things that are.

The album is entirely self produced and (apart from drums) performed and is an opportunity to take a less polished approach, one he might not always have the freedom to pursue when producing for other artists.

Waters has played for more than 10 years in Greg J. Walker’s critically-acclaimed Machine Translations, starting around the time Walker produced Brisbane band The Boat People’s second album ‘Chandeliers’.

Waters was a singer/songwriter in The Boat People, who were active from 2000-2011, released three highly-lauded albums and a clutch of Triple J playlisted singles (including ‘Unsettle my Heart’ and ‘Awkward Orchid Orchard’), played The Big Day Out, supported artists like David Byrne, Crowded House, The Shins and Chad VanGaalan, and toured the USA and UK a number of times, playing live on KCRW and WFMU on the back of strong college radio support.

CHANNEL started to form in the period after this, while Waters was cutting his teeth as a producer for other artists in his own studio, Glamour Trowel.

To date he has produced work for Ella Hooper, Eves Karydas, Kate Miller-Heidke, Darling James (The Boat People’s other main singer/songwriter), Dan Parsons (who plays drums on CHANNEL), Kate Alexander and Hana Brenecki, North Arm, S.J Smith, Wilding, Soft Rubbish and written for Washington to name a few.

Apart from Machine Translations, he has also played in the bands of Ella Hooper, Dan Parsons, Tim Harvey (Real Feelings) and all-abilities band The Hackkets.

The album was mastered by Jonathan Burnside (Sleepy Jackson, Melvins and Red House Painters producer) who, along with Walker, was one of Robin’s recording mentors at Eastern Bloc studio where he got his first recording credit as assistant engineer on Dan Sultan’s ‘Get Out While You Can’ album.
